The foundation of reading is language. Marti Erickson and Kim Insley discussed ways to encourage a love for reading even at a young age. They gave practical examples of how to incorporate the following:

1. Talk to babies, long before they can talk back
2. Introduce the fun of language
3. Ask “How,” “Why,” and “What if” questions
4. Read part of a story and have your child make up the ending
5. Have child dictate and illustrate their own book
