How can you help your child understand and cope with a serious illness or hospitalization?

A child life specialist from Children’s Hospitals and Clinics of Minnesota lends wise advice in this week’s show.

Being hospitalized can be scary and confusing for a child and a parent. Diane Dingley from Children’s Hospitals and Clinics of Minnesota joins Marti and Erin to discuss the variety of services Child Life specialists provide, including using play and art to help a child understand medical terms, equipment and even the sounds and smells encountered during a procedure. Talking in an honest, non-threatening manner will help your child or teen feel less anxious and powerless in the face of a medical problem, and Child Life professionals can help you know what to say and do in those difficult situations.
