Battling backtalk
All parents probably have experienced it – from a toddler’s screams of “Nooo!” to a teen’s rolling eyes and rude remarks made under her breath. Backtalk is never fun.
Marti joined Diana Pierce with some practical advice on how to to teach and encourage more respectful communication whatever the age of your child. Here are Marti’s suggestions:
1) Define “respectful” and “disrespectful” for your child.
2) When your child is disrespectful, name it right away.
3) Explain what the consequences will be and follow through.
4) Model respectful communication.
5) Acknowledge when your child communicates respectfully.
