Family-school partnerships – the key to school success

For school-age children, those lazy days of summer are history and the challenges of school and homework are the order of the day. But kids are not the only ones who need to make an effort in order to achieve success in school; school success is a family affair. Family involvement in a child’s learning is the single most important factor in predicting school success. But what exactly does that mean? Marti talked with host Pat Evans about the most important ways parents can support their children’s learning.

Tips for Parents:

1) Make sure child is ready to learn (rested, fed, secure)

2) Set high expectations, balanced by encouragement

3) Ask child about their school experience every day

4) Create time and space for homework

5) Communicate regularly with teachers

6) Attend school events and visit classrooms

I think that parents can do so much more to support their children’s learning and frequently be involved in learning that schools can’t support. In fact teachers these days must spend too much time preparing and being involved in testing to be concerned about developing children’s independent self-regulated learning skills. The problem is that parents need guidance and support in this endeavor that schools don’t seem prepared or inclined to provide.
